Want to know how IY-LAW tournaments run? What the debate format is? How it all works?
You’ve come to the right place. Read on.
What is the debate format of IY-LAW?
An IY-LAW trial spans 75 minutes. Each side comprises four members: one each for opening statements, direct examination, cross-examination, and for closing statements.
During a 30-minute preparation period, teams are presented with a ‘Case Overview‘ document detailing the background of the case, with witness statements and descriptions. Teams will spend this time writing their speeches, questioning their own witnesses, and strategizing for the trial. Use of electronic devices is permitted during the preparation period, however they must be turned off at the beginning of the trial.
Once the trial begins, teams will adhere to strict time constraints for each segment: 3 minutes for opening statements, 5 minutes for examination and cross-examination of one witness per side, and 3 minutes for closing statements. Strategic pauses, lasting 1 minute each, punctuate stages to allow teams to regroup.
Post-debate, a 2-minute feedback session promotes improvement through constructive criticism. With designated roles, teams collaborate seamlessly to present compelling cases.

How are teams scored?
In IY-LAW, each member of the team plays a crucial role in presenting a compelling case. The opening statements set the stage by introducing the central issues of the case and engaging the judge or jury.
During direct examination, team members skillfully establish the credibility and expertise of witnesses through effective questioning and rapport-building. Cross-examination involves strategically undermining the credibility and reliability of opposing witnesses while maintaining control of the examination.
Finally, the closing statements provide a concise recapitulation of the team’s position and arguments, along with a persuasive plea for the judge or jury to rule in their favor. Together, these roles ensure a cohesive and compelling presentation of the case’s narrative, evidence, and legal theories, ultimately aiming to secure a favorable verdict for the team.
